Thailand’s MotoGP Future Uncertain: Negotiations Threaten 2026 Race
MotoGP action in Thailand: Will the roar of the engines continue? Negotiations determine the future of this thrilling race.

Thailand’s vibrant motorsport scene faces uncertainty as the government negotiates with Dorna Sports, MotoGP’s commercial rights holder, to extend the country’s contract to host the prestigious motorcycle racing event. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong confirmed ongoing discussions, highlighting Thailand’s significant benefits from hosting the Grand Prix over the past seven years. However, Minister Sorawong stressed that any extension must maximize national benefit, cautioning against an agreement that could disadvantage Thailand.

Currently, Thailand hosts MotoGP at the Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram, the only track in the country meeting MotoGP’s exacting standards. The circuit successfully hosted the 2023 Thai MotoGP in March, featuring Marc Marquez’s victory over his brother, Alex. However, reports—stemming from a Facebook post by Newin Chidchob, chairman of the Chang International Circuit and a prominent figure in Thai sports promotion—suggest the government might end its sponsorship after the 2026 race. Mr. Chidchob claimed the Sports Authority of Thailand informed him of the government’s intention to terminate the contract after next year’s event.

Minister Sorawong’s confirmation of negotiations offers hope for the event’s continuation. He underscored the government’s commitment to securing advantageous terms, differentiating MotoGP from Formula 1. While expressing Thailand’s willingness to host both, he emphasized the need for separate, tailored agreements. This reflects a strategic approach to leverage motorsport’s popularity to boost tourism and the economy while safeguarding national interests.

This focus on attracting major international events is broader. The minister revealed efforts to secure concerts by world-renowned artists in Thailand next month, further invigorating the tourism sector, mirroring Singapore’s success in hosting Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. The Tourism Authority of Thailand will present a detailed proposal and funding request to the cabinet, proactively enhancing Thailand’s standing as a premier destination for entertainment and sporting events.

The future of MotoGP in Thailand remains uncertain, dependent on the negotiations between the government and Dorna Sports. These discussions are critical for Thailand’s motorsport landscape and its broader strategy to attract international events, impacting the economy and its passionate motorsport fanbase.
