Thailand is poised for a significant shift with the proposed development of mega-casino-entertainment complexes. While the government touts economic benefits—increased jobs and revenue—a recent Nida Poll reveals widespread public apprehension.
The poll uncovered substantial opposition. A significant 32.60% of respondents expressed concerns about increased crime and a decline in morality, fearing a surge in criminal activity. Another 30.23% voiced skepticism regarding the government’s promised economic boon, demanding concrete plans ensuring benefits for all citizens, not just the wealthy.
Furthermore, almost 28.09% highlighted the potential for increased gambling addiction, emphasizing the need for robust preventative measures. Concerns about money laundering and the complexes becoming havens for illicit activities were also raised by nearly 25% of respondents.
The process itself drew criticism. Twelve percent questioned the absence of a public referendum, while 10% demanded a feasibility study.
Adding to the anxieties, over 31% fear the potential for social and political unrest, raising concerns about violent clashes.
