Rayong Man Jailed, Ordered to Compensate Assaulted Nurse
Security footage captures the aftermath of a violent outburst at Rayong Hospital, highlighting an assault on a nurse.

A Rayong man has been sentenced to one month and fifteen days of home detention and fined for assaulting a nurse at Rayong Hospital. The assault occurred after he was denied permission to visit his daughter’s sick grandmother. The incident, captured on hospital security footage, sparked public outrage and highlighted the pressures faced by healthcare workers.

On the night of February 16th, 46-year-old Sanpong, an industrial estate worker, arrived at Rayong Hospital with his young daughter to visit his grandmother in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His grandmother was being treated for influenza. A nurse, citing infection risks, refused the visit, explaining the potential danger of exposing the child to the virus.

Sanpong reacted angrily to this refusal. He told the court he lost his temper due to the nurse’s manner, and slapped her twice in the face. The hospital’s security cameras recorded the entire incident, providing irrefutable evidence of the assault.

This act led to Sanpong’s arrest and subsequent charge with assaulting a government official on duty. He appeared before the Rayong Provincial Court on Wednesday. While pleading guilty, Sanpong attempted to mitigate his actions by citing the nurse’s communication style as provocation.

The court, considering his confession, reduced his initial three-month jail sentence to one month and fifteen days, suspending the sentence and granting him home detention. In addition to the detention, Sanpong was ordered to pay 77,273 baht in compensation to the nurse for physical and emotional distress. He posted 60,000 baht bail and has indicated his intention to appeal.

This case underscores the challenging circumstances faced by healthcare workers, particularly those in frontline roles. They must navigate complex medical situations, ensure patient safety, and simultaneously manage interactions with emotionally charged individuals dealing with the stress and anxiety of family illness. The incident also emphasizes the importance of clear and empathetic communication between healthcare providers and patients' families, especially during emotionally vulnerable times. While understanding family anxieties, hospitals must maintain strict protocols to safeguard patients, particularly those in vulnerable conditions such as ICU patients. The court’s decision, while acknowledging Sanpong’s confession, sends a clear message that violence against healthcare workers will not be tolerated. The case continues to garner public attention and fuels the ongoing discussion regarding the protection and respect due to healthcare professionals.
