Phuket Leads Green Revolution in Medical Tourism
Government backing and sustainable practices fuel Phuket’s rise as a premier medical and eco-conscious tourism destination.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has endorsed Phuket’s ambitious plan to transform itself into a globally renowned medical hub and a leading destination for sustainable tourism, according to the Bangkok Post. Speaking at the inaugural Thailand Sustainable Tourism Conference (TSTC) 2025 in Phuket, the Prime Minister highlighted the island’s potential and the government’s commitment to supporting its growth. This visit, her second since assuming office, underscores the importance her administration places on Phuket’s development.
In her keynote address, “Soft Power: A Tool for Thailand’s Sustainable Tourism,” Ms. Shinawatra emphasized Phuket’s existing strength as a tourism driver, particularly its growing reputation as a destination for medical tourism and long-term stays by international visitors. This focus on medical tourism reflects a global trend of individuals seeking healthcare services abroad, often combining them with leisure and extended travel. Destinations such as Singapore, South Korea, and Germany have successfully cultivated thriving medical tourism sectors, and Phuket appears poised to join their ranks.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of sustainable tourism, a concept gaining worldwide traction as destinations balance economic growth with environmental protection. She stated, “A balance needs to be obtained between tourism and the environment—not only among tourism operators but society in general.”
Historically, Phuket, like many popular tourist destinations, has faced challenges related to environmental degradation stemming from rapid tourism development. This renewed focus on sustainability signifies a shift towards a more responsible and long-term approach to tourism management.
The government’s support for Phuket’s development follows increased foreign investment announced in January by the Board of Investment, further solidifying the island’s economic prospects. The upcoming Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026, also to be held in Phuket, highlights the island’s growing prominence in the international tourism arena.
The government’s plan includes:
- Supporting Phuket’s development as a world-class medical hub.
- Promoting sustainable tourism practices throughout the island.
- Assisting local businesses in catering to high-end tourists.
- Investing in infrastructure improvements and public transportation.
Thanet Tantipiriyakit, President of the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA), outlined the association’s own sustainable tourism plan, which focuses on upgrading the capabilities of tourism operators. This includes encouraging businesses to obtain the “Green Hotel Plus” certification, a globally recognized standard for sustainable tourism practices. Mr. Tantipiriyakit also called on the Prime Minister to expedite budget allocation for critical infrastructure and public transportation improvements, essential for supporting a growing tourism sector. He noted that tourist arrivals in Phuket this year have already surpassed last year’s figures, indicating a positive trend in the island’s recovery and growth.
This ambitious initiative has the potential to reshape Phuket’s future, attracting a new wave of visitors seeking both high-quality medical care and immersive, sustainable tourism experiences. However, its success hinges on effective implementation and continued collaboration between the government, local businesses, and the community.
Is Phuket Expensive?
Phuket offers a range of accommodation and dining options to suit various budgets. However, its growing reputation as a luxury destination means prices can be higher than other areas in Thailand, particularly for premium services and experiences.
What is Medical Tourism?
Medical tourism involves traveling to another country for medical treatment, often for procedures that are less expensive or more readily available than in the traveler’s home country. It can also be combined with tourism activities, creating a “medical vacation.”
