Falling Branch Kills Tourist in Phuket; Safety Review Launched
A picturesque ride along a scenic Phuket beach road turned tragic on Thursday when a falling pine tree branch killed a 43-year-old Lithuanian tourist. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a. m. on Nai Thon Beach Road in Thalang district, has prompted local authorities to reassess the area’s safety.
The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of his family, was riding his motorcycle along the popular coastal route when the branch fell from a towering pine tree. The impact, directly onto the tourist’s helmet, caused fatal head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local residents alerted authorities, prompting a swift response from patrol police and rescue workers. Upon arrival, they found the Lithuanian tourist’s lifeless body near his damaged motorcycle. Police Major Witsanu Chalok, the investigating officer, and Police Colonel Salan Santisasanakul, chief of Sakhu police, immediately launched an investigation.
The victim’s body was transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The Lithuanian embassy in Bangkok has been informed and is likely coordinating with Thai authorities to provide consular assistance.
The incident has raised concerns about hazards posed by mature trees along roads in this popular tourist destination. Following the accident, workers from the Sakhu tambon administration organization (TAO) began trimming and removing branches along Nai Thon Beach Road to mitigate future risks. This immediate action underscores the seriousness with which the local administration is treating the incident.
