Bangkok Police Bust 40-Million-Baht Car Theft Ring
A sophisticated scheme involving forged documents and online sales netted over 40 million baht, with one suspect still at large.
Thai authorities have dismantled a sophisticated car theft operation that allegedly stole at least 50 rental vehicles, netting over 40 million baht. The intricate scheme involved forging documents to re-register stolen cars and selling them online to unsuspecting buyers. The arrests, announced Thursday by Pol Maj Gen Khongkrit Loetsitthikun, commander of the Highway Police Division (HPD), conclude a months-long investigation spanning multiple provinces.
Eight of the nine suspects named in arrest warrants—including four women—are in custody. They face charges including embezzlement, document forgery, using falsified documents, and providing false information to government officials. The ninth suspect, 26-year-old Warut, remains at large.
Alleged masterminds Phattharada (32) and Tharathep (32) orchestrated and financed the operation. Their accomplices played various roles: Chokchana (66), Ramphai (30), and the fugitive Warut allegedly rented the vehicles; Ratthanaphon (35) and Sippawin (32) forged documents to re-register the stolen vehicles under false identities and obtain new license plates; Ramwirin (30) managed online sales via social media; and Chaiwat (39) delivered the vehicles to buyers.
The investigation began in December 2024 when a Chachoengsao car rental business owner reported a stolen vehicle re-registered with a new license plate in Nakhon Pathom. She contacted the highway police hotline and conducted her own investigation. The Department of Land Transport’s (DLT) mobile application confirmed the reassignment, raising further concerns.
The highway police and DLT uncovered fraudulent documentation. The stolen vehicle was spotted on January 8, 2025, traveling north from Nakhon Pathom. A high-speed chase ensued, culminating in the car’s interception in Tak province and the buyer’s detention. The buyer, who paid 300,000 baht online, unknowingly provided crucial information to unravel the network.
This case highlights the sophistication of criminal enterprises and the importance of inter-agency cooperation. The dismantling of this car theft ring demonstrates the diligent efforts of Thai law enforcement and sends a strong message against such activities. The ongoing search for Warut underscores the authorities' commitment to justice. While eight arrests represent significant progress, the investigation continues to uncover the full extent of the gang’s operations and identify potential victims.
