Thailand Actress Faces $1.8 Million Embezzlement Probe in Bangkok
Luxury goods, including a valuable necklace, were allegedly pledged without permission, prompting a multi-million dollar investigation.
A high-profile embezzlement case involving Thai actress Arisara “Due” Thongborisut is unfolding in Thailand, captivating public attention. The case, filed by Wasana Intasang, CEO of Revomed Co., a health and beauty products company, accuses Thongborisut of misappropriating luxury goods worth 62 million baht (approximately US$1.8 million).
The controversy centers on allegations that Thongborisut borrowed and subsequently pledged Ms. Intasang’s luxury items, including handbags and an emerald and diamond necklace crafted by Lotus Arts de Vivre, valued at 26 million baht (approximately US$760,000). Rumors that the necklace had been acquired by a cabinet minister, identified only by the initial “P” or the Thai moniker “Por Pan,” prompted denials from Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira and Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, both of whom share that initial.
Adding to the intrigue, television anchor Kanchai Kamnerdploy announced on the “Hon Krasae” talk show that the necklace had been returned to its owner. According to Ms. Intasang’s lawyer, Athachai Jaeng-arun, an individual known only as “Toon” facilitated the return, claiming to have purchased the necklace from Thongborisut for 8 million baht (approximately US$235,000). Mr. Jaeng-arun denied the involvement of influential figures (“phuyai” in Thai).
Pol Col Anek Taosuparp, deputy commander of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. While Thongborisut has not been formally summoned, Pol Col Anek stated that initial findings suggest a potential embezzlement charge. Under Thai law, this carries a maximum three-year prison sentence, though a settlement remains possible if the assets are returned and charges are withdrawn. He added that any third party knowingly receiving and refusing to return the embezzled items could face prosecution for receiving stolen goods.
Thongborisut’s lawyer, Nitisak Meekuat, revealed that the actress is currently abroad and has not yet returned to Thailand. Mr. Meekuat maintains that her absence does not indicate an intention to evade justice.
This is not Thongborisut’s first public controversy. Earlier in 2023, she accused her former boyfriend of running an illegal gambling operation and abusing her, prompting her to seek refuge in Taiwan.
The ongoing investigation continues to capture public attention as authorities unravel the complexities of the case and determine the extent of Thongborisut’s alleged involvement.
