High salaries attract Thai massage therapists to France, but migration costs and legal hurdles remain significant challenges.

France’s Thai Massage Boom: High Salaries Lure Therapists
Thai massage therapy in France: A serene setting for a booming industry, ensuring fair wages and worker protection.

The Thai Ministry of Labour is collaborating with the Association Française Nuad Thai & Spa (AFNTS) to enhance the skills of Thai massage therapists working in France, responding to the burgeoning demand for this traditional healing art. This initiative aims to create a secure and lucrative pathway for Thai workers seeking employment in the French spa and wellness sector.

Recent discussions between Permanent Secretary Boonsong Thapchaiyuth and AFNTS President Sasima Park highlighted the significant opportunities presented by the French market. Starting salaries for massage therapists reach €1,824 per month (approximately 64,000 baht), excluding tips and overtime. Mr. Thapchaiyuth emphasized the competitive wages and high demand, fueled by UNESCO’s recognition of Thai traditional massage as an intangible cultural heritage. This prestigious designation further solidifies the practice’s global value and appeal.

To address the gap between demand and qualified practitioners, the Ministry of Labour, through its Department of Skill Development (DSD), is providing upskilling programs and issuing nationally recognized certifications. This empowers Thai massage therapists to meet the stringent requirements of the French market and secure legal employment. Individuals seeking to enhance their qualifications and pursue opportunities in France are encouraged to contact the DSD for certification details.

While the financial prospects are attractive, challenges remain. Ms. Park highlighted the significant cost of bringing Thai workers to France, estimated at around €5,000 (roughly 184,165 baht) per person. This financial hurdle often compels individuals to seek employment independently, increasing their vulnerability to exploitation and fraudulent schemes. To mitigate these risks, Ms. Park urged the Ministry of Labour to explore avenues for facilitating legal migration through the Department of Employment, ensuring a safe and regulated process for aspiring Thai workers.

The absence of a Thai Labour Office in Europe presents another obstacle. Although the Ministry of Labour acknowledges this, the growing number of Thai workers in France may necessitate a reassessment of this situation in the future. The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding Thai workers abroad, ensuring access to fair wages, benefits, and legal protection against exploitation.

This collaboration represents a crucial step in promoting Thai traditional massage internationally while providing secure and rewarding employment opportunities for Thai citizens. It highlights the growing global recognition of this cultural practice and its economic potential within the wellness industry. The Ministry’s proactive approach to skills development and worker protection aims to create a sustainable and beneficial framework for Thai massage therapists seeking successful careers in France, fostering a vibrant cultural exchange and economic partnership.
