Kaeng Krachan National Park: Clouded Leopard Family Flourishes
Rare glimpse! A clouded leopard mother and cub captured on camera in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park.

Exciting news for wildlife conservation: a clouded leopard mother and cub were recently captured on camera in Kaeng Krachan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Thailand. Park chief Mongkol Chaipukdee announced the discovery on Friday. The sighting, achieved via a high-resolution camera trap in early January, occurred while park officials were tracking a herd of banteng, a type of wild cattle.

Clouded leopards, named for their distinctive cloud-like markings, are listed as “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List. It is estimated that fewer than 200 remain in Thailand. This discovery within the massive Kaeng Krachan National Park (2.9 million rai, or approximately 1.1 million hectares) is a significant event.

The sighting is a testament to the park’s conservation efforts and the effectiveness of camera traps in monitoring wildlife. However, clouded leopards face ongoing challenges, including habitat loss, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade. They are protected under Thailand’s Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act of 2019.

Adult clouded leopards measure approximately 90–110 centimeters in length and weigh 15–20 kilograms, making them difficult to track in dense jungle environments. The camera trap footage provides invaluable data on their behavior and population. Mr. Chaipukdee stated that the park is expanding its camera trap program to monitor other endangered species, including banteng.

This discovery raises the possibility of a clouded leopard population recovery. Let’s celebrate this incredible news and continue supporting efforts to protect these magnificent creatures. Spread the word!
