Bangkok Airways Expands Fleet to Meet White Lotus Tourism Surge
A new fleet of up to 30 aircraft will handle surging demand, boosted by the “White Lotus” effect and record tourist projections.
Bangkok Airways is poised for significant growth, fueled by a resurgent tourism industry and the unexpected popularity of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” The Thai carrier, known for its routes to idyllic destinations, plans to heavily invest in its fleet and infrastructure to capitalize on this burgeoning demand. The airline intends to order up to 30 new aircraft, revitalizing its aging fleet and positioning itself for a substantial increase in passenger traffic.
In an interview, CEO Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth revealed the airline’s ambitious strategy. Bangkok Airways is in discussions with Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer to acquire at least 20 single-aisle jets in the first half of the year, with options for an additional 10. This aggressive acquisition plan aims to expand the fleet to at least 30 aircraft within the next four to five years, supplemented by leased aircraft as needed. Mr. Prasarttong-Osoth emphasized the necessity of this expansion, stating, “We need to grow, and a new aircraft fleet is mandatory.” The current fleet of 25 jets includes some aircraft approaching two decades of service, underscoring the urgency of modernization.
The “White Lotus” effect is playing a significant role in this growth trajectory. The HBO series, which filmed its latest season partly on the picturesque island of Koh Samui, has sparked a surge in interest in the region. Bangkok Airways, uniquely positioned as the owner and operator of Koh Samui Airport, stands to benefit considerably. This ownership grants the airline a near-monopoly on flights to the island, a highly sought-after destination.
Mr. Prasarttong-Osoth noted a 14% increase in advanced bookings for the second quarter, a period traditionally considered the low season for Thai tourism. This surge in demand reinforces the positive impact of the show’s popularity. The airline anticipates a 10% to 20% rise in passenger numbers on its Koh Samui routes, building upon the 2.7 million passengers carried last year.
The anticipated influx of tourists, spurred in part by “The White Lotus” and the Thai government’s prediction of a record 40 million visitors this year, has prompted significant infrastructure investment. Bangkok Airways will undertake a 1.5 billion baht renovation of Koh Samui Airport in the latter half of 2025. This three-year project, designed to allow continued airport operation throughout the renovation, will further enhance the passenger experience. Furthermore, the airline has secured approval to increase its daily flights to Koh Samui from 50 to 73, demonstrating its commitment to meeting the growing demand.
Beyond Koh Samui, Bangkok Airways anticipates record-breaking passenger numbers across its network. Mr. Prasarttong-Osoth projects 4.7 million passengers in 2025, surpassing the 4.3 million flown in 2024. This ambitious expansion, driven by fleet modernization and the “White Lotus” phenomenon, positions Bangkok Airways for sustained growth and reinforces its key role in Thailand’s thriving tourism sector. The carrier’s strategic investments not only address the immediate surge in demand but also lay the foundation for long-term success in a highly competitive market.
