Thailand: Police Smash Massive Call Center Scam Ring
Thailand’s National Police Chief, Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch, leads the crackdown on transnational call center scams, resulting in hundreds of arrests.

Thailand is waging an intensified war against transnational call center scams, launching a nationwide operation involving thousands of checkpoints and resulting in hundreds of arrests. Spearheaded by National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch, the Royal Thai Police (RTP) aims to disrupt criminal networks and bolster public confidence. This campaign represents a significant escalation in efforts to combat call center fraud, which frequently targets vulnerable individuals domestically and internationally.

Between January 20 and February 10, 2023, the operation yielded significant results. According to RTP spokesman Pol Lt Gen Achayon Kraithong, 524 foreign nationals involved in illicit activities were apprehended, with entry denied to an additional 231. Furthermore, over 45,000 individuals were placed on a watchlist, demonstrating a proactive approach by Thai authorities. These efforts extend beyond reacting to reported crimes; the RTP is actively identifying potential threats and preventing future criminal activity.

The operation’s scope is impressive. Over 5,000 checkpoints were established nationwide, acting as a dragnet to apprehend those involved in human trafficking and other crimes linked to call center operations. Nearly half a million vehicles were inspected, and almost 20,000 people were screened at these checkpoints. Scrutiny extends beyond roadways, encompassing accommodations, transport hubs, border checkpoints, and even natural border crossings, minimizing avenues of escape.

Illustrative of the operation’s success are arrests in Songkhla and Tak provinces. In Songkhla, two suspects were apprehended with two SIM boxes and computer equipment—tools commonly used in sophisticated scams. Similarly, two suspects in Tak were found in possession of a large quantity of communication equipment. These seizures demonstrate the tangible impact of the crackdown, depriving criminal networks of essential resources.

The RTP’s commitment extends to internal accountability. Five officers in Tak province were transferred to inactive posts pending investigation into alleged illegal activities. This decisive action underscores the RTP’s dedication to transparency and accountability, signaling zero tolerance for complicity. Pol Lt Gen Achayon emphasized that Pol Gen Kittharath is «satisfied with the overall performance» and is determined to build public trust and reassure tourists.

Recognizing the adaptability of these criminal enterprises, Pol Gen Kittharath has ordered agencies to meticulously assess their evolving strategies. Previous measures, such as disrupting electricity, internet, and fuel supplies to border areas, have forced adaptation. Anticipating further tactical shifts, such as relocating operational bases, the RTP is preparing additional countermeasures. This proactive approach signals a long-term commitment to combating these criminal networks and protecting both Thai citizens and visitors. The ongoing effort underscores Thailand’s commitment to maintaining law and order and safeguarding its reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.
